Sunshine Movie Review

So a movie that I heard about last year and have been wanting to see is Sunshine, from the director of “Trainspotting” and “28 Days Later”, Danny Boyle.   It also stars (see the universe reference) Cillian Murphy, the guy from “28 Days Later”, the Scarecrow from “Batman Begins” and the creepy guy from “Red Eye”.

The premise of SUNSHINE is that in 50 years from now the Sun is dying. It is no longer providing the energy and the light that mankind needs to survive on Earth. The entire global community pools its resources to send a mission into space to deliver a bomb to reignite the part of the Sun that is failing.  The story focuses on the eight astronauts and scientists who lead this mission.  On their journey towards the Sun the crew stumble upon the ship that was sent on the same mission seven years previously, the Icarus I, drifting in space.  From this point on things start to go very wrong and it’s about how the crew react under the enormous pressure of their endeavor to save mankind.

This movie started off great!!!  It was really fantastic.  I thought it was incredibly fascinating how they portrait the sun and it’s power.  It’s something I can’t fully comprehend.  And lately I have marveled at space and the universe and just how massive and how perfect it all fits together.  Truly an example of the Creator’s work.  That is what drew me to want to watch the movie.

Then the end kind of went crazy and seriously flipped out.  I have a way of ruining endings to things, so I won’t describe what happens.

All in all I give it a solid 7 out of 10 but only because the ending really didn’t fit.  It was almost like they hired some weird crackpot to write the end.  It really didn’t flow. Actually I had to watch it in two parts.  I started watching it this morning, then had some chores and errands to run, and when I got back to finish it, I almost wondered if someone switched the DVD on me.  Because right when I came back is when things started getting weird.

Would I recommend it to my friends…sure why not.  I’d even watch it again because it starts out really great.  I just hate the ending.

  1. Was the ending (what percentage?) as bad as the final 10-15 minutes of Abyss (another movie which started out great, but ended lamely)?

  2. I liked Sunshine… I agree about the ending, but actually enjoyed the last scene.
